Identifying Sleep Disorders
There are many types of sleep disorders, but they usually fall into one of the following major categories.
Insomnia - A persistent inability to fall and/or to stay asleep.
Hypersomnia - Sleeping too much or sleeping at inappropriate times. Sleep apnea and narcolepsy are the chief causes of hypersomnia.
Diagnostic Evaluation
The "SleepLab" offers diagnostic testing of sleep-wake disorders on an outpatient basis. A polysomnogram or sleep study records multiple body functions (i.e., heart rate, breathing, and eye and limb movement) while the patient sleeps so that the sleep-wake disorder and related medical probelms can be correctly diagnosed. A qualified physician then interprets the data and forwards it to the patient's referring physician with treatment recomendations. Careful communication with the patient is the key to successful treatment.
